Comparing the Fleet Library site through time Usability test with the Fleet website Treemap Java Script App Lab

Usability Test of the RISD Fleet Library

From the reading assignment I related my study to Galbreath, B.I, Johnson, C., & Hvizdak, E. (2018). Primo new user interface: Usability testing and local customizations implemented in response. Primo New UI was the name given to the new front end of the primo discovery layer, which was made available to customer's in August 2016. According to Ex Libris, "It's design is based on user studies and feedback to address the different needs of different types of users" (Galbreath, Johnson, and Hvizdak. 2016, pg 11). I wanted my questions to be on a rating scale from 1 to 10, also with observing the users navagation process in looking for key answers to my questions. Before asking the users questions to perform a task I first asked them to take the time to look at the Fleet Library site, scroll through to get a feel for the interface. I asked them a series of five questions leading to a task.

I was mainly looking for the process of navigation, did they use the search bar rather than the tabs? The study of their behavior in completing each task. I did time each user but that was not what I based my study on only because they did not take that much time to complete a task the longest of time taken was 3 mins. My study was about the quality of the content, is the site user friendly and if the site met the standards and brand of the school. The people I asked to be users were, two friends (user A and B). A suggeted person from the friends (user C), and two co-workers (user D and E).

The first thing the users said was how nice and clean the site is they loved how it was and not cluttered and over loaded with information such as tabs, large colorful texts and graphics. One said it was very calm and peaceful just to look at and having a visual piture of the ceiling will get visitors to the library. While observing the process of the users navigating the site, I was pleased with how most of them explored the site, some of them had tunnel vision when completing a task meaning that person did not take the time fully navigate the interface. Most of them completed the given task under 3 mins using tabs or the search bar. Users A at the end of the survey felt the menu was a bit redounded with the top and bottom menu selections and did not like the small white font by the search bar, they felt it was lost against the basckground but did like how it changed to yellow as the curser met the text. All five users felt the library web site fit the brand of the college as an art and design institution. All useers completed their task with different strategies without frustractions however there were some stops and pauses along the way to completion.

rr
UserTime Functions Content and Interest User Comments
User A 3mins Felt the Function was ok to navigate. Content is ok. Menus are redounded, white text gets lost in the background, clicking issues, navigation needs improvment.
User B 2mins No problem completing task and function worked properly. Content is find. Love the site wanted to know what III did they use so nice and very clean not busy.
User C 2mins No problem completing task function are find to work with. Content is find. The site space represent the college very well clicking on the departments in the banner image change to the depart itself cool!
User D 1min 30sec. Functions are great. Good content satisfied with searches. Site fits the brand and very clean, love the scrolling feature at the bottom (featured Collections) peaceful and calming.
User E 2mins. Function are ok needs improvment Content was ok with what they search exspected more from a Design Institute. Fit the brand of the college, felt the background pic is overwhelming waste of space and wanted more with key word searches with wire jewelery.

User Satifation Scale From 1-10

What I have notice in observing the users in this survey is that some users used different strategies to gain access to information. Some went right to the search bar first like a google search rather than going to the tabs. They did not do anything wrong they still completed the task just a different format than what I exspected. Most of them love the aesthetic appeal of the site. I did speak of one user having tunnel vision with their search meaning they did not take the time to explore the site instead they went right to the about the library tabs to find the RISD library map no luck, until scrolling to the bottom of the screen. Three of the users I've chosen are librarians or library specialist so they had some knowledge and patience on observing before making an action. Some of the users were please with the over all function and look of the Fleet website, it was not over whelming to navigate and some said they were a little jealous for a library to have a site not only organized but nice to look at while searching for materials and information. Two users wanted to know what was their III, wondering if they were using Sierra LSP or something else. Just like the article we have read you can't satisfy everyone and there is always room for improvement, three out of the five users of this survey were saftisfied and felt the Fleet site was user friendly and represented the brand of the institution.

What have I learned from this weeks assignment

I enjoyed the learning process with this week assignment with how to use HTML CSS with the usablity test. I like how CSS you can start your codes at the begining so every thing after is in in a similar formate. I did find myself problem solving again like that last assignmnt with the table. I noticed as I was putting in my data from the survey and test I needed to add another column with user comments, I was not that difficult to figure out what to do, which was copy the existing code add the content that is needed and there is develope a column on the table as I needed. I also figure out from the HTML assignment that your files have to be saved the same way through out in oder to retrieve them for Filezilla, this was infact the image of the chart I had a bit of a speedbump. I did notice the back ground color disappeared from my site with the CSS coding. So far the was not bad and another good skill to learn for web building and design with organizing nformation.
