I am currently a student at the University of Rhode Island's Graduate School
of Library and Information Studies, with a projected graduation of May 2020.
I am also employed as a student reference assistant in the
Reference Department of Carothers
Library at URI's Kingston campus, where my primary responsibilities are
reference services at the information and research desk, and providing
information literacy instruction to undergraduate classes in Communications
Studies, Engineering, and the Talent Development Program.
I am nearing my goal of becoming a reference or programming librarian after
I graduate. I believe that the best fit for me would be a small to
medium-sized public library. I find the variety that library
reference transactions bring, from reader's advisory to technology help,
as well as interacting with diverse library users to be the
highlights of my day. I enjoy helping patrons
find the information that they need as well as teaching information literacy
skills. My other interests include Library Programming and Young Adult
services. It is important to me that my position allows me to serve
traditionally underserved populations.
I am also a Navy spouse and have served as the Ombudsman to
the U.S. Navy's Third Fleet command. I have also volunteered as a disaster
preparedness educator and shelter manager for the American Red Cross; a
budget counselor for Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society; and as the Vice-Chairperson
of the non-profit Navy Newport Choristers. I also volunteered in elementary
schools and held leadership postions in several navy spouse organizations.
My husband and I have three children, ages 23, 21, and 14. We are enjoying
putting down roots in New England, after having lived in Florida, Virginia,
Washington State, and Italy. In many ways, New England reminds us of the best
parts of the places that we were raised in Oregon.
My hobbies include knitting, crocheting, inkle weaving, nalebinding, sewing,
embroidery, and a variety of other fiber and textile arts.
I also enjoy playing with my cats and dog,
laughing at the antics of my backyard chickens; baking, traveling; reading;
singing; and watching British detective mysteries. I am a member of the
Newport County Amateur Radio Club, where I am working toward becoming a trained
Skywarn Spotter. While I enjoy literature, the genres that I gravitate to for
pleasure are historical fiction, mysteries and speculative fiction. I have
written one novel for NaNoWriMo and hope to resume participating after I
graduate. I'm also in search of a new local D&D group!
My pronouns are she/her/hers.
