I had taken the prerequisite to LSC 548: Information Architecture and Web Site Development several years ago and admittedly had not used HTML code since then. The labs assigned early in the semester started with HTML basics, like header and paragraph tags, building toward more complicated tasks, like creating tables and inserting images. From there, I learned CSS code to create a stylesheet, which enables multiple webpages to be formatted and updated at once. JavaScript was a challenge to use but being able to make elements on my webpage interactive is rewarding. Learning to use Atom, a text editor, was a tremendous help when writing code, particularly because the tags, elements, etc. are displayed in different colors to facilitate reading.
As I look back to the start of the semester when I had trouble remembering which way the “/” went in an end tag to having built a website from scratch, I feel a great sense of accomplishment. I plan to continue to learn more about these programming languages, either through another course or workshop. The tutorials and reference materials on w3schools.com will also be extremely useful resources. I would like to work in an academic library. This course has prepared me to create content such as through a website or app as well as feel more confident in my ability to answer programming-related questions.
