Ruby Struble: About Me

My name is Ruby Struble, and I'm a second-semester student at University of Rhode Island in the Master’s program for Library and Information Science. I’m a big music nerd, but my favorite recent music discovery is Icelandic music. Mum, Olof Arnalds, Sigur Ros, and Amiina are huge parts of the music videos that play in my imagination now, and I feel like I can sleep anytime and anywhere with their music, sweet dreams guaranteed. There’s something magical about Iceland. Their language hasn’t changed much since ancient times, and they have lots of volcanic/geothermal activity that they use for heating. It’s a tradition to give each other books on Christmas there, and they have a Christmas cat and thirteen Christmas “Yule Lads” instead of just Santa. Their musicians’ imagination seems to mesh well with mine, encompassing floating through the universe, looking up and dreaming about the “beyond” at night, and fairy-tale landscapes.

One of the most well-known Icelandic musicians is Bjork, and she was my introduction to the country’s music and is still my favorite artist. I discovered her music two years ago, and found that there wasn’t a single album I didn’t love every single song on. As a writer, her music makes me picture adventures in a whole different setting, and I feel weirdly “at home” when I’m singing along to my favorite album, Biophilia. Her music is full of love and emotion, and some songs change tone based on my mood when I’m listening, like chameleons. Although I’m studying to be a librarian focused in technological services, which requires a lot of concentration and practicality, I’m still a daydreamer at heart and feel the most comfortable in this world when I’m listening to music in my room, my mind somewhere else.
